Origin and Habits:
This horticultural variety originates from a small region in Catamarca Province, Argentina, with an average altitude of 2,500–3,300 meters.
Description:
These are among the most famous horticultural varieties of Opuntia, admired by many for their completely spineless form. In the wild, the areoles on the pads have 9–20 tiny spines, arranged flatly in a radiating pattern, slightly curved as they grow along the stems—an uncommon and distinctive feature. The pads are smooth and harmless, and more importantly, their flowers are captivating. When the flowers first bloom, they display a delicate light pink color. Over time, the color deepens, and by the second day, just before the blooms fade, they turn into a rich candy pink. Occasionally, the flowers exhibit stunning pink and yellow striped patterns, adding to their beauty.
Cultivation and Propagation:
Due to their thickened main roots, these mountain cacti require sufficient aeration. Deep pots with well-draining mineral potting mixes are ideal for their growth.
Watering:
They do not require excessive watering but need sufficient water during their growing season.
Frost Resistance:
They can tolerate frost temperatures of -5°C to -10°C. During winter dormancy, they should be kept in a cool environment. Proper exposure to cold is essential for vernalization, which allows the differentiation of flower buds, leading to beautiful blooms in the following year.
Light Requirements:
These plants need ample sunlight for optimal growth and flowering.
